Diana Creasey (1757-1834) of Martham

Diana Creasey was born on 24th January 1757 in Martham as the fifth child of William Creasey & Mary, nee Robins. Her siblings were: Elizabeth, Benjamin, Jemima, Jane, Robert and Ann.

Not much is known about her life except that she came from a comfortably off family of long standing in Martham. Both her great grandfather William (1636-1712) and her great, great grandfather Richard (1602-1678) had been tailors in the village. Her father, William (1717-1797) was a successful grocer and draper but also invested in land. In addition, he married Mary Robins who had inherited a fortune from her parents who had lived at Itteringham, near Aylsham. When her father died his will did not state how much he left. His estate went to Diana’s mother but she died only a year after William and their three remaining daughters inherited everything divided equally between them. This left Diana well off and of independent means throughout her life. An indication of her wealth can be drawn from her land ownership at the time of the 1807 Inclosure Act and the 1812 Inclosure Award. Under the 1807 Act property and land owners had to make claims for what they owned. A copy of Diana’s 1807 claim is shown below in which she lays claim to 130 acres of land and five houses.

By the time her claim was determined under 1812 Inclosure Award she had acquired more land and was awarded just over 146 acres of arable, marsh, meadow and woodland in Martham alone, as shown in the Commissioner’s summary of the 1812 Award list below.

The two maps below come from the 1812 Commissioners maps and records of the Dean & Chapter of Norwich. Held in the Norwich Record Office Ref: CHC 11910 and BR 276/1/172. The land Diana owned in 1812 accounts for almost all the land to the west of Black Street. Plot 72 is now the Playing Field. Plots 184, 185 & 186 are now Bell Meadow.

Diana did not of course actually farm this land herself but would have let it out to others to provide part of her income. Records of Land Tax assessments show that from 1800 to 1812 she let land in Martham to William Payne, in 1800 for £2 per annum for which she had to pay eight shillings in tax and by 1812 this had gone up to ten shillings. In 1832 she let land to her nephew Robins Purdy which was also liable for Land Tax.

Diana never married but some idea of her lifestyle can be gleaned from her will dated 21st June 1826 and two codicils dated 30th December 1828 and 13th May 1833. Her will is shown at the bottom of this page but is difficult to read so I have added a transcript, as far as I can make it out. With no children to inherit she left her estate to be shared equally between her four nephews other than some bequests. Some aspects of her character can be gleaned from her Will but are subjective. She was obviously deeply religious; she included the Parish church name in her London address. She especially mentions two bibles and a collection of ecclesiastical magazines. She named the Reverend Thomas White Holmes as an executor to her Will and he appears to be more of a good friend than just her priest. The complex language of her Will indicates a detail-conscious person, financially astute and cautious. The conditions she sets to one generous bequest to her servant is nevertheless amazingly contrived to protect her own estate. Traditionally of the time she mentions her linen, wearing apparel and a valuable tea caddy but does not seem to be all that materialistic as there is no mention of furniture, paintings or prints which are usually mentioned in Wills of that period.

Towards the end of her life, she left the dividends of £400 investment to the local school. Under this endowment six poor girls were to have their clothing and school fees paid. She was emphatic that girls were to benefit, which is commemorated on a large blackboard that stands at the back of St Mary’s. (The blackboard, shown at the top of this page, contains two errors. Firstly, it calls her ‘Mrs’ when she never married and secondly it says the gift was made in1835 when in fact she died in February 1834 although she may have made the bequest at the end of her life and her executors honoured it later).

Diana’s final years were spent living at Mayfair, London where she died on 10th February 1834, aged 78. In accordance with her wishes she was buried at St Mary’s, Martham and her gravestone can be seen at section D, plot B1. It says: “Here lieth the body of Diana Creasey the daughter of William Creasey and Mary (nee Robins) his wife formerly of this Parish. She died in the Parish St Marylebone, London on the 10th day of February 1834 Aged 78 years. In life she was …………….”
